Materials

IV. Materials required for your moonshine still

The following bill of materials is required to construct your still. In parentheses I’ve included potential sources for your parts. See the beginning of this chapter for a definition of acronyms. Here’s a legend for the following list:

  • fips = female pipe thread
  • mips = male pipe thread
  • slip = slips on a pipe and need to be soldered
  • HD/L = part can be found at Home Depot or Lowes
  • PSC = part can be found at the local plumbing supply or internet

Bill of materials:

Pipe

  • 5′ of 1 1/2″ copper pipe (PSC))
  • 3′ of 3/4″ copper pipe (PSC or HD/L))
  • 3′ of 1/2″ copper pipe (PSC or HD/L))
  • 5′ or 1/4″ soft (bendable) copper pipe (PSC or HD/L))

Reducers

  • Qty 2 – 1 1/2″ x 3/4″ reducers (PSC)C)
  • Qty 1 – 3/4″ x 1/2″ reducer (PSC or HD/L)

Female adapters

  • Qty 1 – 1 x 1 1/2″ Female Adapter (slip x fips) (PSC))

*Note: This part’s vague name makes it a hard one to find. This is the part is connected to the bottom of the reflux column and allows the sink strainer to be screwed into it.

  • Qty 3 – 3/4″ x 1/2″ Female adapter (slip x fips) (HD/L or PSC by request)
  • Qty 2 – 1/2″ x 1/4″ Female adapter (slip x fips) (HD/L or PSC by request)

      Fittings

      • Qty 2 – 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ x 3/4″ Reducing Tee (PSC)

      • Qty 2 – 1 1/2″ x 1 1/2″ x 1/2″ Reducing Tee (PSC)
      • Qty 1 – 1 1/2″ Cap (PSC)
      • Qty 1 – 3/4″ 90 degree Elbow (NOT street!) (PSC or HD/L)
      • Qty 1 – 3/4″ 45 degree Elbow (PSC or HD/L)
      • Qty 1 – 3/4″ Male garden hose adapter (¾.” mips X garden hose male) (PSC HD/L)
      • Qty 1 – 3/4″ Female garden hose adapter (¾.” mips X garden hose female) (PSC HD/L)
      • Qty 2 – 1/4″ change from female to male x 1/4″ compression fitting (HD/L or PSC by request) (on the right in the picture below)

      Miscellaneous

      • Qty 1 – 1/2″ x 1/2″ full port ball valve (slip x slip) (PSC or HD/L)

      • Qty 1 – Sink strainer (These are VERY standard. Pick the one you like best . the wider, the better. (PSC or HD/L)
      • Qty 1 – 1/2″ female boiler thermometer/pressure gage (these can be found all over the place, including HD/L, but for some reason, PSC does not carry them)

*Note: Only operate any still outdoors. Obtain all required building, safety, federal and state permits and licenses before operating your still.
